Patrol Services Division

Des Moines Police Patrol CarIn recent years, the Uniform Patrol Division has embraced the concept of "Community Policing". The reason for the change is simply that it works. We are working to combine the resources of our Police Department with those of the neighborhood groups, social services agencies and other city entities to provide a blanket of service able to cover nearly every situation that arises. No single agency can do it alone, but by working together and continually encouraging participation from the community, we are better suited to achieve our common goal.

The Police Department ensures the quality of life, within the City of Des Moines, by not only working for you, but with you. The recently formed Neighborhood Based Service Delivery Team is a prime example of the Police Department and the community coming together for the good of the community.

Patrol Section

The Patrol Section is an intricate part of the department. This section provides the citizen of Des Moines with around-the-clock protection and service. The Patrol Officers and Supervisors work hard to keep the lines of communication open between the department and the community. Each officer assigned to a routine beat works hard in learning the businesses, the neighborhood, and the people that make up the neighborhood. Officers assigned to Patrol Services are among the best-trained officers in the Midwest. The professionalism and dedication to duty and honor are examples of their pride for the community they serve.

Special Operations Section

The Special Operations Section falls under the command of the Uniform Patrol Division. Within the Special Operations Section are the Tactical, Traffic, and Animal Control Units. The Tactical Unit is comprised of highly trained officers specializing in Dignitary Escort and Protection, Hostage and Barricade Situations, Waterway Operations, Bicycle & Motorcycle Patrol and Riot Control. For more information, visit the Tactical Unit website.

Traffic Unit

This unit is assigned the task of investigating all serious and fatal traffic collisions or accidents, as well as the vast majority of traffic related enforcement. The officers assigned to this unit receive training in Drunken Driving Enforcement, RADAR and LAZER speed enforcement and levels of accident investigation from basic to reconstructionist. For more information, visit the Traffic Unit website.

Animal Control Unit

The Animal Control Unit controls the city's animal shelter. Members of the Animal Control Unit respond to requests from officers, as well as those calls from the general public. The unit is tasked with the duties of Animal Adoptions, Animal Bite Incidents, Illegal Animals, Licensing of Animals, Lost Pets, Stray or Nuisance Animals, and Vicious Animals.
