Des Moines Officers Receive Honors

Ron FosterDetective Ron Foster has been selected as the 2008 Police Officer of the Year by the Des Moines Rotary. Detective Foster was nominated for this award by his commanding officers for his first-rate work with the Detective Bureau.

Accompanied by his family, his commanding officers, and Chief Bradshaw, he received the award at a Rotary meeting in July. You will see his picture over this next year on billboards around town announcing the Police and Firefighter of the Year. Detective Foster has been on the department for 39 years and in the Detective Bureau for 20 years.

6th Annual Cop Classic

Once again the rain held off and the 6th Annual Cop Classic was again a successful event. The sky was sunny and bright as the day began. The breeze turned into wind by the end of the day making life on hole 17 its usual challenge but the girls held fast and true to the end. 26 teams took to the links at Blank Golf Course and at the end of the day the team from Legends American Grill, A. Krum; J. Lark; J. McConville and M. Schmickey shot at 62 to be crowned champions for 2009 with hole prizes going to Tom Daughenbaugh (Longest Putt) Ryan Doty (Closest to the Pin) and J. Simon (Longest Drive).

This year Dave Murillo and Bobby King worked the grill and Denise Beener, Sue & John Meeker worked on distribution of “dogs” throughout the day. The registration table and hole #17 were worked by Anna Kingery, Sharon Schinkel and Deb Mook with Peggy Schleuger taking care of the prize table. As usual, with this experience team at work, all went smoothly throughout the day.

The evening prior to the event at the Des Moines Police Officers Credit Union, we were able to present this year’s winners, Zachary Viggers, Joshua Viggers, Alyssa Mantz and Ashley Bjurstrom each a $1,000.00 scholarship. This is the part of the event that makes it special, the ability to get a significant number of officers and friends together for a enjoyable day of golf and also help the children of these officers get there collage career started.

Once again I would like to thank Dennis O’Donnell and Linda Powers for all the work they do behind the scenes to secure sponsors. The Des Moines Police Credit Union for their co-sponsorship of the entire event and Chief Bradshaw for providing the help needed to make the day run smoothly from beginning to end.

We enjoyed another successful event and look forward to Cop Classic #7.
