5th Annual Cop Classic Recap

Golfer 1 Well the rain held off and the 5th Annual Cop Classic was once again a success. The sky was overcast most of the day and the “Tent City” was once again constructed on hole 17. Anne, Anna and Sharon worked the golfers hard but once again need a little shelter from the cool breeze. 30 teams took to the links at Blank Golf Course and at the end of the day the team of Daniel Blom, Josh Rhamy, Matt Schnell and Mark Mohr shot a 57 to be crowned the champions for 2008.

Golfer 2Our fearless leader, Dave Murillo, supervised Bobby King, doing the cooking again this year and Nancy Beghtel and Peggy Schleuger delivering the dogs and taking lots of pictures. The day concluded with a great dinner followed by a good number of the golfers sticking around the club house, telling lies and enjoying a refreshment or two.

Golfer 3The evening prior to the event at the Des Moines Police Officers Credit Union, we were able to present this year’s winners, Paul Harkin, Sonja Ouimet, Trista Woody and Jessica Penland each a $1,000.00 scholarship. This is the part of the event that makes it special. The ability to get a significant number of officers and friends together for a enjoyable day of golf and also help the children of these officers get there collage career started.

Golfer 4Once again I would like to thank Dennis O’Donnell and Linda Powers for all the work they do behind the scene to secure sponsors. The Des Moines Police Credit Union for their co-sponsorship of the entire event and Chief Bradshaw for providing the help needed to make the day run smoothly from beginning to end.

We have enjoyed another successful event and look forward to Cop Classic #6.

Iowa Association of Chiefs of Police & Police Officers

In May of this year the Iowa Association of Chiefs of Police & Police Officers celebrated their hundredth anniversary.

A joint conference with the Iowa Corrections Association was held in Des Moines at the Fort Des Moines Hotel May 29 -June 1. The Des Moines Police Burial Association was asked to assist the two organizations in holding the conference in Des Moines. I volunteered to oversee the transportation needs of the members attending the conference.

Tim Manning of Bob Brown Chevrolet did not hesitate in offering vehicles to the Des Moines Police Burial Association for use during the conference.

In return to show our appreciation a plaque was given to Bob Brown Chevrolet for their support and contribution to the conference. A special thank you to Tim Manning!!!

Pictured presenting the Plaque to Ron Brown, President, Bob Brown Chevrolet, are S.P.O Roger Stiles and Sgt. John Meeker. Tim Manning was out of town and unable to attend the presentation.
