Extra Duty Officers Information

For those of you needing extra duty police officer assistance the rate per hour is $45 with a minimum of three hours.

The Des Moines Police Bargaining Unit Association recognizes the need of private employers who wish to engage professional law enforcement peace officers to provide for immediate on-site law enforcement action. The membership of this association, in partnership with public entities, private business, and the individual public, endeavors to meet the need for quality professional supplementary extra duty on-site law enforcement peace officers.

The ability to provide on-site immediate law enforcement service, and any individual agreements for reimbursement for those services, are done so with the express written consent and approval of the Chief of Police of the Des Moines Police Department. Public entities, private business, and interested individual parties who engage peace officers for these supplementary extra duty needs do so acknowledging that the law enforcement officers are under the control and direction of the Chief of Police and/or designee of the Des Moines Police Department.

Effective 01January 2016, the recommended hourly rate for Supplementary Extra-Duty Police service will be charged at $45.00 per hour, with a three (3) hour minimum. Christmas Day, New Years Eve Day, New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving Day, are considered major holidays and are to be paid at the premium rate of two times (2x) the normal rate.

Cancellation of a Supplementary Extra-Duty Officer(s) prior to a scheduled date/time of service must be made no later than seventy two (72) hours prior to the scheduled date/time of service. Cancellation of service less than seventy two (72) hours prior to date/time of service is subject to a cancellation fee of one hundred twenty ($120) dollars per officer.

Short Notice fees: Requesting a Supplementary Extra-Duty Officer(s) with less than forty-eight (48) hour notice may result in a ten dollar ($10) increase per hour above the recommended rate.

This association recognizes that some private businesses may not immediately be able to accommodate this increase and are asked to work mutually with DMPBUA members to incrementally adjust the hourly rate where needed.
